Ernest A. Bates bookplate, 1926
This bookplate illustrates the manner in which a person's initials can be used to create a bold, modern design. . The designer's name, Sidney Hunt, appears in small letters, as does the date, 1926. Elizabeth Mast Hyatt included this bookplate in a large collection she assembled during the 1920s and 1930s to honor famed opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921). Hyatt was a summer resident of Wayne, Annie Louise Cary's birthplace. In 1938 a library was built in the town and named the Cary Memorial Library. The bookplate collection became part of the library's collections.
