Contributed by Windham Historical Society

Description

This souvenir booklet was produced by the Oriental Powder Mills shortly after the Civil War. The mills were located along the Presumpscot River in South Windham, and were at the height of production during the War, producing 25 percent of the Union Army's gunpowder.

The booklet lists branch offices and agents and includes images of the physical site, mill buildings, and special features like the company's test cannon. It also includes an explanation of how gunpowder was produced and why the Oriental Powder Mills gunpowder was a superior product.
