Notre Dame de la Sagesse Convent, St. Agatha, ca. 1905

Contributed by Ste. Agathe Historical Society

Description

Construction of the Notre Dame de la Sagesse Convent in St. Agatha began in May 1905.

Daughters of Wisdom Mother Marie Therese, superior; Sister St Anselme, cathechish; Sr. Victorine de St. Francois, nurse; and Sister Euphrone, housekeeper; had arrived in St. Agatha on October 1, 1904.

The main convent building, with a facade of 100 feet long and four stories above the basement, was nearly complete by the end of the year. The convent functioned as a day school, boarding school for students from across New England and hospital.

A 1912 addition housed a music room, auditorium, elementary grades, and a new chapel.

The high school held its first commencement exercise on May 28, 1910. By 1924, the high school received a Class "A" rating from the State of Maine.

In 1940, a new convent was constructed, which later became a housing unit named Montfort Heights.

The original convent served as St. Agatha High School until it was demolished in 1968.

Today, the Daughters of Wisdom reside in a smaller convent located directly behind Montfort Heights.
