Description

The 4th Maine Regiment advertisement in the October 10, 1861 edition of the Progressive Age newspaper.
The ad states, "The popularity of the Maine 4th, makes this a desirable chance for any one desiring to enlist." Capt. Andrew D. Bean and Lieut. R. H. Gray were the recruitment officers.

The 4th Maine Volunteer Militia was the only Civil War infantry organization to be mustered into service in Maine's Mid-coast area. The regiment was unique, for it was an all-volunteer unit, no military conscription was needed to fill the ranks.
