Welcome to Governor Baxter, St. Agathe, ca. 1922

Contributed by Ste. Agathe Historical Society

Description

A special event celebrated in front of the Notre Dame de la Sagesse Convent. The pastor of the St. Agatha Parish officiated at the ceremony.

As stated in The History of Ste. Agathe Parish, "Fr. Paul S. Buhrer had the privilege of welcoming Governor Percival Baxter to our parish in 1922. The Daughters of Wisdom had invited him as guest speaker at the May graduation."

"Mr. le Cure s'vance pour saluer le Governeur et les enfants crient: Three cheers for the Governor!"

Une de nos petites pensionnaires debite alors une petite addresse de bienvenue et offre des fleurs a Son Excellence;......il rentre au Convent tandis que la foule des curieux s'ecoule radidment mais en bon ordre. (Daughters of Wisdom, 1922).

Baxter's love of nature and the hospitality given by the Sisters and parishoners attracted Baxter to other Ste. Agathe High School graduations.

Governor Baxter bequeathed $25,000 to Ste. Agathe High School as a testament to his warm feelings for Ste. Agathe.
