Description

This photo appeared in the Sanford Tribune on March 14, 1919, p. 4. The B.C. Jordan Lumber Company was founded in 1861 on the Saco River. The mills and office were in Bar Mills, and the business was practically confined to dealing in oak for ship timber.

The office was moved to Alfred in 1875, where, until his death in 1912, B.C. Jordan carried on a general lumber business, with mills at Whicher's (Sanford), Butler's Corner (Springvale), Emery Mills, and East Waterboro, and also with ocasional portable mill operations.

Following Jordan's death, substantial blocks of property were taken out for the members of the immediate family, and the remaining 12,000 acres was turned over to Bates college, to be held perpetually under the practice of modern forestry.
