Description

Stiles Bros. Store on Main Street, circa 1895.

From left are Austin J. Smith, owner of a hardware store in Springvale; Eugene W. Stiles, Herbert Smith, an employee of A. J. Smith; George Bartlett, who operated a billiards and pool parlor on Bridge Street; Roy N. Stiles, Benjamin M. Jenness, owner of Jenness Department Store in Springvale (and an undertaker); Jenness's dog Spot; and Howard J. Frost, a lawyer.

Stiles Brothers was one of Sprinvale's most successful and durable businesses. Started in 1877 by Isaiah B. Stiles, it occupied this building from 1881 until 1939.

Stiles retired in 1890 and was succeeded by his sons, Eugene and Roy (later joined by their younger brother, Leon). When they took over, the name of the business was changed to Stiles Brothers.

The firm sold clothing and manufactured its own clothing. Leon died in 1916 at an early age and Roy passed away in 1936. Eugene carried on for three more years after the death of his last surviving brother. In 1939 he sold to Edwin L. Shaw who continued the business for several more years.
