Description

Augusta S. Quimby (1833-1928) was 31 years old and unmarried when she helped to design and sew the Belfast Civil War soldiers quilt in June 1864.

Her talk, "Recollections of the Civil War," written in 1917, describes events and activities that took place during the war years. Of special interest is her description of the decision to create a quilt, "as a diversion from real work it was proposed to make a Flag Bed Quilt for a hospital."

This photograph was taken in Belfast on February 27, 1861.
