George F. Strong bookplate, 1915

Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne

Description

George F. Strong was the librarian of Adelbert College of Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. His childhood home in Kent's Hill is illustrated on this personal bookplate.

The bookplate was one of several sent to Wayne summer resident Elizabeth Hyatt upon her request. She was collecting bookplates in honor of famed opera singer Annie Louise Cary, who was born in Wayne, and for whom the current library is named.

The text on the bookplate includes the name George Franklin Strong, the date 1915, and the initials J.B.J., presumably the artist's.

The letter accompanying the bookplate mentions that as Strong's birthplace was Kent's Hill, only a few miles from Wayne, "I am naturally prejudiced in favor of your request."
