Bates Mill #4 and #5, Lewiston, ca. 1980

Contributed by Lewiston Public Library

Description

Two of the 11 mills in the massive Bates Mill complex in downtown Lewiston are reflected in the canal that provides their water power. Bates Mill #4 (left) was built in 1880 and expanded in 1915; Bates Mill #5 was built in 1914. The canals are still used today to generate power for the mills, although textile operations are no longer in service. However, part of the complex is home to offices, apartments, and businesses.
