Description
The Bates Mill is reflected in the canal that powers it. Acquired by the city of Lewiston in 1992 and now redeveloped into businesses, a museum, and apartments, the Bates Mill was the largest employer in the state of Maine as recently as the 1950s, when more than 5,000 people worked here in textile production.
Constructed between 1852 and 1923, the Mill complex eventually consisted of 11 buildings -- approximately a total of 1.2 million square feet on 10 acres in downtown Lewiston.
This section of the complex is Bates Mill #2 at left with the Connector Building (with the tower), the Office Building, and Mill #1 at right.
The Office Building was demolished in 2008.
The Bates Mill complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 2010.
