Description
Sgt. Charles H. Pettengill of Auburn, a member of Co. I of the 29th Maine Infantry wrote to Mrs. Martha Osgood of Hollis. He had corresponded with her for some time after receiving a sewing kit that she had made in which she embroidered her name.
Osgood's sister, Rebecca Usher, was a nurse during the Civil War and probably distributed the sewing kit to Pettengill.
Pettengill wrote that he was thinking of joining the Mexican Army to "help drive the French from this part of the world." He wondered if Osgood thought it a good idea.
Pettengill mentioned Usher and her nursing duties and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
