Description

A group of Squirrel Island matriarchs and other guests take in the Fourth of July ceremonies of 1918 from the shade of the veranda around the island's Post Office. A large Liberty Loan flag is suspended above the Post Office, its stars indicating the number of residents who have taken out bonds in support of the war effort.

In addition to mail service, the Squirrel Island Post Office served as the community's bulletin board. To the left of the building is an Honor Roll of Squirrel Islanders in military service.

Not all activities were focused on the war in Europe - the notice on the chalk board on the right hand side of the building reads: "First Hop Of Season Thursday July 4th At 8:15 PM Admission 25c."

This Post Office and its bulletin board are largely unchanged and still in operation. Part of this building is also now the home of the Squirrel Island Historical Society.
