Rufus Choate letter declining invitation to speak, 1856
E.W. Farley, on behalf of the Whig State Committee of Maine, invited Rufus Choate (1799-1859) to speak at an upcoming meeting in Waterville. In this letter of Aug. 9, 1865, Rufus Choate declines the invitation, and describes his opposition to the newly founded Republican Party.
Choate was a Massachusetts State Senator and later a lawyer. With Daniel Webster and Edward Everett he assisted in organizing the Whig party in Massachusetts.
