James Lawrence reassignment order, 1865

Description

Special Order #297 discharged James Lawrence from Company H 11th Maine Veteran Volunteers and reassigned him to the United States Colored Troops. He served in the Colored Infantry Regiment, 6th.

The discharge paper for James Lawrence from the 6th Infantry regiment of the United States Colored Troops is dated Sept. 20, 1865.

James Lawrence was a Civil War soldier who, after the end of the Civil War, was appointed to the United States Colored Troops, 6th, serving out of Raleigh, North Carolina.

At this point, James Lawrence had been serving as a soldier for about three years. He had seen service as part of the 11th Maine Volunteer Infantry, Company H. His older brother, Luther, was also a member of the 11th.

Luther was killed August 16, 1864 at Deep Bottom, Virginia. James was wounded, but continued serving until his discharge on September 20, 1865.
