Description

Luther Lawrence was born on Jan 26, 1840 in Gray, where his grandparents had settled and built a homestead in the early 1800s. Luther was the eldest son of Nathaniel Sawtelle Lawrence and Mary Ann Harris Lawrence. Brother James was four years younger.

Members of the Lawrence family resided in Gray, Pownal and North Yarmouth.

Luther began his military career in the Militia and was among the first men who joined the Union Army when he enrolled with the First Maine Regiment (Co. E) in April of 1861 at the start of the Civil War. After three months, he re-enlisted in the 11th Maine Regiment (Co. H) where he went on to become a Lieutenant and later a Captain of his Company.

Luther's younger brother James joined the 11th Maine, Co. H in 1864 and they served together until Luther was mortally wounded in the Second Battle of Deep Bottom, Virginia, on August 16, 1864. James was wounded in the battle. Luther is buried in his hometown of Gray in a family plot.

This undated photograph of Luther shows him in full dress uniform, complete with sword.
