"Corner of veranda on old toll house shows in the right of the left hand picture. The Warren Bacon house is just beyond and to its left stand the Island Avenue Congregational Church and the Skowhegan High School.
"Note wooden sidewalks on the left and right; also the muddy and rutted condition of the street. As late as 1880 I recall seeing truck teams so badly mired there as to require assistance of other horses to haul them out."
