This tintype portrait of William Pitt Preble (1811-1905) is housed in a cartouche card. Preble came to Great Cranberry Island as a school teacher, then held many civic posts while pursuing his shipbuilding, shipwreck appraising, and store-keeping enterprises. He was the second owner of the Preble House, surviving two wives and raising nine children.
