Description

This photograph of William Pitt Preble (1811-1905) was taken when he was about 50.

Preble was related to the Preble family that emigrated from England to Portland in the 17th century. He was the son of the Mount Desert Rock lighthouse keeper.

Preble moved to Great Cranberry Island where he was a teacher, church elder, selectman, justice of the peace, tax appraiser, postmaster, storekeeper, shipbuilder, and shipwreck appraiser.

On the back of Preble's portrait is a photograph of an "unknown woman" with a pencil-mark swirl across her face that likely served as the backing of Preble's framed portrait.
