Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Portland native John Marshall Brown, who enlisted in the 20th Maine Infantry on August 29, 1862 as a first lieutenant and adjutant, was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 32nd Maine Regiment in May 1864.

In that position, he would have worn this colonel's shoulder strap. It bears the eagle insignia for colonel, and is non-regulation in that it has a double border, a larger than usual eagle, and is embellished with sequins.
