Berwick residents, at a Town Meeting on March 14, 1911, approved a monument in memory of those who fought in the Civil War to be placed on Sullivan Square in front of Town Hall.
This monument was proposed by the John A. Logan Relief Corp, which was established to aid needy veterans and their dependents and to advance and promote the teaching of patriotism in the public schools.
The town appropriated $2,000 for the monument.
