Description
This postcard is of the second St. Mary's Church of Westbrook. St. Mary's Catholic Church was Westbrook's second Catholic parish, the first being St. Hyacinth's. In 1916, the french speaking St. Hyacinth's church was becoming crowded, and it was decided that the English speaking members would form a second parish. In 1917, St. Mary's was dedicated.
St. Mary's Church was on the ground level of the building. The building also had school rooms on the second floor for kindergarten through eighth grade, that were taught be the Sisters of Mercy, and the parish hall was in the basement. In the early 1970s a new church was built next to the earlier one and the old church became the parish hall.
The second St. Mary's church was razed in 2012, after St. Mary's and St. Hyacinth's churches again merged in 2010. At that time the original St. Mary's Church building was purchased by Legacy publishing.
