Contributed by Berwick Historical Society

Description

In this photograph, grammar and high school students are shown standing in front of the Sullivan school building in the year that it first opened.

In 1872, School Districts 2, 5 and 16 were combined into the Sullivan School District. As a result, this three story school was built and served as a grammar and high school for the district. The first graduating class was in 1883 and consisted of a total of thirteen students. Just 22 years later, on the night of April 10, 1894, the building and and nearly all of its contents were destroyed by fire.
