Westbrook Star Laundry, Westbrook, ca. 1934
Contributed by Walker Memorial Library
This photograph shows the Westbrook Star Laundry employees lined up outside the laundry for a parade, in the 1930s. The laundry began in the late 1890s on Bridge Street and moved to the Carpenter Street location, pictured here, around 1924. The building was razed in the mid 1970s during Urban Renewal, and the laundry moved to Eisenhower Drive.
An employee on the left in the photo is holding a N.R.A. sign to signify that they were a company that complied with the NIRA, the National Industrial Recovery Administration, part of Roosevelt's New Deal to help the recovery of the economy during the depression.
