Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

The Saccarappa Grange No. 481, of the Patrons of Husbandry were the sponsors of this float in Westbrook's Centennial Parade held on June 9, 1914. The Saccarappa Grange was organized August 22, 1907. It was a part of a national fraternal organization that promotes well being in the community, agriculture, and further promotes the causes of farmers.

The national organization began in 1867, and was unusual in that they encouraged the participation of women and teens, as well as required women be elected to leadership positions in the grange. Westbrook had 2 chapters of the Grange, the Saccarappa and the Highland Lake Granges. As of 2013, the Highland Lake Grange is still active.
