Description
This is a close up view of the Bramhall Reservoir gatehouse located between Vaughan and Brackett Streets. The Reservoir was built in 1869 by the Portland Water Company to hold water pumped from Sebago Lake. In turn the water was pumped from the Reservoir to City distribution pipes. The capacity of the Reservoir was between ten to twelve million gallons.
The Reservoir was kept later as an emergency reserve water supply, and was flattened in 1964 by the Portland Water District in preparation for leasing the area to the Maine Medical Center for parking as the reservoir was no longer deemed needed. At that time, the Portland Water District still maintained the Munjoy Hill Reservoir, which had a capacity of 22 million gallons.
