Bangor Rye Bread Bakery entrance, ca. 1976

Contributed by Raymond H. Fogler Library

The Bangor Rye Bread Bakery was the business of Reuben and Clara Cohen, parents of William S. Cohen, former United States Secretary of Defense (1997-2001), Senator (1979-1996) and Representative (1973-1978). Many of the buildings in this area along Hancock Street were torn down in the late 1970s as a part of an urban renewal movement. The steeple of St. John's Catholic Church, which still stands, appears in the background of the photograph.
