Description

This picture of Harbor Cottage was likely taken in the 1930's or 1940's. According to notes on the picture by Katharine L. Savage, the stone wall in front was built in 1883, the same year the first Asticou Inn building was erected across the street. Katharine Savage also notes the original advertisement for taking in guests at Harbor Cottage around 1870 was a shingle posted on a tree outside Harbor Cottage with the word "Boarders" painted on it. According to Katharine Savage Harbor Cottage housed the first Library on Mount Desert Island. The registry for that Library is in the collection of the Northeast Harbor Library, and supposedly the first name in the Library register is Samuel Eliot.
