Description
This painting of Asticou shows Harbor Cottage (present day Cranberry Lodge) and the "Old House" of John Savage II and Climena Roberts Savage when the Old House was located on the present day site of the Asticou Inn. The Old Ell attached to Harbor Cottage is clearly visible. The scene depicted is a view North up towards Asticou from Northeast Harbor and what the area looked like around the time of 1860-1870, as we know Harbor Cottage was constructed in 1855, and the fist Asticou Inn was not built until 1883. The artist of this painting was Dr. John L. Hughes (1830-1894) of Portland, Maine and is based on his early memories of Asticou and presented as a gift to his brother-in-law, A. C. Savage sometime in the late 1880's. Dr. Hughes was married to A.C. Savage's older sister, Caroline R. (1827-1868). Caroline died relatively young from injuries suffered during a carriage accident. Dr. Hughes came from Poughkeepsie, NY and established a medical practice in Portland, ME sometime around 1850. He remarried after Caroline's death but remained friends with the Savage family until his death.
