Description

This page from a scrapbook assembled in the 1920's and 1930's by Mary L. "Mame" Savage (1910-1997) shows some of the houses in Asticou, many which still stand today. "Phillips House" in the upper right hand corner of the page was owned at one time by Augustus D. "Gus" Phillips and his wife Mary and was designed by his Uncle, Fred L. Savage for Gus' parents. The gambrel house titled "Home" is known as Hilltop House and was the year-round home of Mame, her parents John C. and Emily N. Savage, and her 4 brothers. It was originally designed and build by Fred L. Savage as a home for Fred and his first wife, Flora. The bottom right image also entitled "HOME" depicts the view back north towards Asticou Way and Rye Field Lane. The first house is Rose Lane, the 2 story structure behind it was the "Shack", a storage garage and apartment quarters for summer chauffers, and the last small house up the lane is the Old Ell, which was first the summer time home to Mame, and later on in life her permanent year-round home. The pictures of the Phillips House and Hilltop House date from the late 1880s. The picture of Rose Lane, the Shack and The Old Ell dates from around 1925.
