Description

George and Mabelle Strout Savage and hotel employees in front of the "Old House". This cape-cod style structure was originally the Climena Roberts / John Savage II house, built around 1820, later known as Maplesides, last family ownership was Donald B. Phillips. It is the first Savage permanent family homestead after the log cabin that his father John Savage had erected when he settled near Harbor Brook in the first generation. The Old House was built in Massachusetts, since it was built in Asticou before Maine became a state. In this picture, the house is located on grounds of the present day Asticou Inn overlooking the harbor. It served many purposes - family and hotel employee housing, and has moved 3 times. Its last move was to a more "out back" location across the street from the Inn, behind Tom Savage's and Stuart Savage's houses, where it stood until February 2013. George A. Savage, Sr. is the man sitting on the grass in the front row. Mabelle Strout Savage is the left-most woman standing on the porch looking uphill. George and Mabelle would marry and later own the Asticou Inn. According to notes on this photo by Katharine L. Savage, in the Middle Row, 3rd from left is Bessie Strout Small. The small child above George A. Savage is Emily Phillips Reynolds.
