Geological display, Northeast Harbor, ca. 1955

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

This photograph, probably taken by Charles K. Savage, is of a group of naturally occurring and oddly balanced stones in a formation caused by a geological phenomenon. The inscription on the back of the print, written by Katharine L. Savage, says: "You and ? perhaps interested in this "Tilting Rock" sometimes a favorite geological display that your grandfather often visited."

Charles K. Savage was known to take a walk in the woods each day, often photographing his favorite native species and stone formations. He also often took a crew of strong workers into the woods with pulleys and other tools to remove particularly beautiful rocks that would later appear in the gardens that he designed or as sculptural features in many locations around Northeast Harbor.
