Rebecca Usher (1821-1912) of Hollis worked as a nurse at the U.S.A. General Hospital in Chester, Pennsylvania, beginning in November 1862.

In early January 1863, she wrote to her sister, Jane, known as Jennie, and discussed the character, injuries, and activities of some of the soldiers in the hospital.

She also wrote about the war. She said, "When once the war ceases, and the battle cloud passes over, our country will rise transfigured before the nations, and perfect liberty will be established for the first time upon the earth."
