Sarah Sampson of Bath, a Civil War nurse and founder of the Bath Military and Naval Orphan Asylum, wrote to Rebecca Usher of Hollis, also a Civil War nurse, to thank her for a donation to the home.

Sampson wrote that the donation came at just the right time when the home was trying to get the orphans ready for winter.

She encouraged Usher to visit and wrote that "Mrs. Mayhew is as happy as possible in the anticipation of a visit from you." Mayhew also was a nurse during the war and she and Usher were friends.
