Description
Frank Moore wrote to Rebecca Usher of Hollis in March 1866, asking Usher for her accounts and relating of incidents from her time as a nurse during the Civil War.
Moore wrote a book, Women of the War: Their Heroism and Self-Sacrifice.
Moore had been directed to Usher by Harriet Preble of Portland, wife of William Pitt Preble, and a founder of the Maine Camp Hospital Association.
Moore explained that he would give no more prominence to Usher than she agreed to. He wrote, "My object being as much to give a view of the general labor of women in this great field, as to eulogize particular heroines. --"
