A Man Straddles the Tracks in Front of Engine Number 4, Monson, 1937

Description

This photograph was taken in 1937, six years before the Monson Narrow Gauge Railroad Company ceased operation. Albion Johnson, fireman for the railroad, is shown straddling the narrow gauge tracks in front of Engine No 4 and the Monson Station which was located on Water Street.

Narrow gauge railroad tracks are 2 feet wide, while standard gauge railroad tracks measure 4 feet and 8.5 inches wide. Also shown in this photograph are Cecil Johnson, son of Albion who is sitting on the platform steps, Gus Johnson who worked in the slate quarry, Harold Morrill, superintendent of the railroad and sometimes worked as conductor, Paul Jackson, railroad clerk and leaning out the engine window is engineer Elwin French.
