Interior of first electric generating plant, Lubec, ca. 1903

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Pictured here is Lubec’s first commercial electric power plant. The generator is in the center, belted to a coal-fired steam engine. This was a private facility built by and for the fishing industry and it was located amid the the Water Street packing plants.

According to the trade journal “Electrical World,” Volume 75 #11 (March 1920), the Town of Lubec Commissioners “have been authorized to construct a municipal electric light and power plant.” Locally generated electricity then powered Lubec for about eighty years until, according to the Bangor Daily News for August 2, 1990, the Bangor Hydro Electric Company bought the system.
