Description

Photo taken from sea shore of the Life Saving Station at Biddeford Pool. The Life Saving Station was opened in 1860 and was used extensively by rescuers who manned it. When ships or boats were in distress near the Pool they would man a lifeboat and go out to help them get to shore. At times they would toss tow ropes to pull them in, or use rowboats to save them.
