Building a boom pier on the Androscoggin River, Rumford, 1893
Description
Workers build a boom pier on the Androscoggin in the winter of 1893. Boom piers were constructed to separate logs that were being floated downriver to go to the different mills. A ramp and a block-and-tackle is pictured on this pier. The equipment was used to pull up a box of rocks on a sled up to the top of the pier. The rocks were then loaded inside the pier for ballast.
