During the winter of 1893, boom piers were constructed on the Androscoggin River in Rumford. This image looks up the river onto the construction area where horses and log sleds are visible. The pier on the left has been filled with rocks for ballast; the pier on the right has not yet been filled. Both piers extend to the river bottom.
Boom piers were constructed to separate logs that were being floated downriver to go to the different mills.
