Letter to Sarah Tarbox from Rebecca, ca. 1850

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

A note of acknowledgment to Sarah Tarbox with regrets for not visiting from "Rebecca". Rebecca may be Sarah's deceased mother's stepmother, Rebecca (Spear) Brown of Litchfield.

Sarah Tarbox, born on January 7, 1823 in Westport (Edgecomb until 1828), was the eighth of 12 children of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a Westport Island gentleman farmer, investor and land trader. Samuel and Polly Tarbox (d. 1848) came to Westport after purchasing land there in 1806; they were originally from Litchfield, Maine. Sarah's grandfather, Andrew Brown (d. 1842), and her stepmother, Rebecca, lived in Litchfield.
