Description
Sarah's cousin, Warren Brown (b. 12-21-1818), writes about his life and studies at Kents Hill School. The letter has a P.S. from Sarah's brother, Valentine, who also attends the school. Sarah Tarbox, b. January 7, 1823, was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a wealthy landowner, gentleman farmer and town official in Westport Island, Maine.
Kents Hill School, in Readfield Maine, was founded as the Maine Wesleyan Seminary in 1824. The letter mentions Mr. Allen who was Rev. Stephen Allen, a graduate of Bowdoin College (1835), who was elected Principal of Kents Hill in the winter of 1841.
The letter references a "Loco Foco" student from New York. According to Encylopedia Britannica, the Locofoco Party was a radical wing of the Democratic Party, organized in New York City in 1835.
