Mamie and Jesse Adams on Haywagon, Dixfield, 1955

Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

This photograph shows Mamie and Jesse Adams on a horse-drawn hay wagon as they get ready to pick up hay in the fields of their farm at Dixfield Common in 1955. Dixfield Common was the original farming center of Holmantown beginning in 1796. The township was incorporated as Dixfield in 1803. The Adams family is descended from the founding family of Dixfield, the Holmans.

The large tree to the left of the wagon, in this image, is an American Chestnut tree. In 2013 there are remnants of this tree that occasionally produce foliage, but the tree is unwell and will soon be lost.
