The property seen in this photograph, originally part of the Davis farm, was purchased by R.M. Armstrong in 1899 to accommodate the families of campers at Camp Durrell. Camp Durrell was a YMCA camp Armstrong founded on Moody Island, now known as Crotch Island. This property also served as one of the summer homes for Armstrong's family.
Later, several of Armstrong's children became involved in making this property the Seaview Hotel. Guests at the hotel included people who came by car or steamboats such as the Monhegan or the Mineola.
Business became so brisk that the Armstrongs built a two-story annex and several other cottages to accommodate the overflow. All rooms guaranteed a water view, although according to one descendent, this might have been only a view of a well. The hotel closed in 1915 due to World War I.
