Description
Pvt. George Redlon of Co. B, 4th Maine Infantry Regiment, wrote from Carver Hospital in Washington, D.C., to tell his father that he had been shot in the arm and agreed to have his left arm amputated above the elbow.
Redlon said he was wounded in the battle near Centreville.
He wrote that it would take about a month to recover strength to travel home, "if nothing unexpected interferes."
Redlon, who was 22 when he enlisted in June 1861, had worked as a jewelry journeyman before the war.
His wardmate, J.J. Habrich of the 5th New Jersey Volunteers wrote the letter on Redlon's behalf.
Redlon died of his injury on October 19, 1862.
