Letter to Sarah Tarbox Greenleaf from her sister-in-law, Lavinia, 1852

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

Lavinia Tibbetts Tarbox, wife of Valentine Tarbox, writes to tell her sister-in-law, Sarah (Tarbox) Greenleaf, about her trip home to Brooksville from Westport. Valentine Tarbox married Lavinia Tibbetts of Brooksville, on July 4, 1851. They had one son, Byron, who was traveling with his mother. Because Valentine was on the road in Washington and Hancock counties for extended periods of time with his daguerreotype business, his wife continued to live primarily with her parents in Brooksville.

Sarah Tarbox (b. 01-07-1823) and Valentine Tarbox (b. 10-18-1827) were two of 12 children of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox, a wealthy landowner, farmer, and civic leader in Westport, ME.
