Walter G. Morrill (1840-1935) of Williamsburg was 20 when he enlisted as a sergeant in Co. B of the 20th Maine Infantry.
He was later promoted to 1st sergeant, then 2nd lieutenant and, on Oct. 8, 1862, to captain and commander of the company. He became a full lieutenant colonel on March 13, 1865.
Morrill won a Medal of Honor at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, on Nov. 7, 1863 for leading his troops, without orders to do so, to support the 6th Maine in its attack.
