George F. Shepley, a lawyer and U.S. Attorney for Maine, enlisted in the 12th Maine Regiment as a colonel in 1861. He commanded the regiment, and soon became military commandant of New Orleans, then military governor of Louisiana, under the command of Gen. Benjamin Butler, then Gen. Nathaniel Banks.
On the back of the photo is written M.U. Osgood, Nov. 19, 1861. Martha Usher Osgood of Hollis was the sister of Rebecca Usher, a Civil War nurse. Among the carte de visite photographs of Civil War soldiers from Maine and elsewhere were two other images of Shepley.
