Alonzo Garcelon, Lewiston, ca. 1879

Description

Alonzo Garcelon of Lewiston (1813-1906), a physician who served as Maine's surgeon general during the Civil War, was mayor of Lewiston in 1871-1872 and governor of Maine in 1879-1880.

A delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856, he switched parties and became a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1888.
