Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

James Hunt, who is about 19, wrote to his parents in Bath about his job and his prospects working for the Russell Walker foundry in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Albert Russell, one of the founders of the company, was from Bath.

Hunt had left home earlier in the summer and traveled to Boston, Providence and New York before settling in Newburyport and obtaining work. He had some acquaintances among the workforce in Newburyport.

He wrote that he planned to "get all the insight" he could into the business in a few months and then go to Portsmouth or somewhere else where he could "do better."

Hunt wrote, "The fact is if a green hand goes into a shop he is always a green hand till he clears out somewhere else and it dont suit me very well to have all hands singing Hunt do this & Hunt do that..."
